I had the same reaction when I read the casting choices for the new Dorian Gray film but that's another story.
Let me paste the little rant I posted over in some other site! This is Holmes. This is Holmes. He is repeatedly described as very emaciated and stylish, aesthetic, with a bird-like profile. Which... makes sense seeing as he works like a madman when he's on a case and shoots cocaine to relax! He is not described as looking like THIS. WHAT THE HELL. DID DOCTOR WHO TAKE A SHARP LEFT IN THE TARDIS. (incidentally this RAGERAGErant applies to Jude Law being Watson as well, what gives?When did Holmes&Watson turn into pretty boys ):< they're handsome in their own way! his sort of bastardization is why I hate modern adaptations) And I haven't really researched the plot but the fact that they squandered 60 000 000 dollars on special effects (???) and that they apparently made Holmes an action hero fills me with righteous, bibliophilic rage. And, I dunno, maybe they could have AT LEAST found a British man for Holmes' part? Even if they did still choose someone who doesn't look like him, at least we wouldn't have to suffer through like 1.5 hours of an American doing a shitty British impression. |

It's so insane. ;_; I die a little every time I hear about the new film. And the TRAILER makes you want to go plunge a knife into your heart. And the script leaked a while back....
While I myself did not read it, a few close friends did and............I was sick.
The movie has Holmes as an alcoholic, emo about Watson's marriage, it's in the wrong timeline, the main villain is into occult, and Holmes has a sex scene.
It is so exceedingly uncanonical that Holmes's name should not be even remotely close to it.
People are so stupid these days that there should be NO adaptations of anything over five years old. Period.
